Ranger Nick's Fishing Report May 23, 2009 Welcome Back to Ranger Nick's Fishing Report Lake Monroe is at 6 feet over pool due to the recent rains, the Largemouth Bass are in the beginning of the post spawn phase and have backed out and are recovering. Some real nice bass can be spotted swimming around the flooded brush and will be starting to feed and move into their normal summer patterns. Carolina rigs and topwater baits seem to be working very well. Try a popper or buzzbait to find the more active bass. The Wipers have been chasing shad up near the brush in the coves, jerkbaits and topwater poppers seem to work well first thing in the morning and late in the evening. The walleye have been hitting minnow and nightcrawler rigs being slow trolled on the mainlake. Most of the best action seems to be very early morning and late evening. Catfish are moving to the spawning areas and seem to be feeding near rocky areas, best bait is cut shad. Crappie and Bluegill have been schooling just off the flooded brush and seem to be hitting very good on small jigs. Surface Temperatures are averaging 72 degrees and the mainlake water has been clear. Lake Lemon has been good with the largemouth feeding heavily on spinnerbaits and chatterbaits in the east end. The largemouth are done spawning on Lemon as well, and if you concentrate on areas just outside of the grass or lily pads you will most likely find the better fish. The crappie and perch on Lemon have been in the 4-8 foot range hitting minnows near brush and stumps. Catfish are biting fair on cutbait and shiners near the deeper channel breaks. Cataract (Cagles Mill) has been high with the fish being up in the flooded timber and bushes. Largemouth and crappie seem to be located in the coves and up tight to the brush. No reports on the catfish or walleye at Cataract, however they should be feeding near the points and rocky areas. I hope everyone has a safe and enjoyable Memorial Day weekend and catches a lot of fish. The weather for the next week looks pretty good.
